Good to know
During winter, heavy snowfall generally closes the Manali–Kunzum Pass route to Spiti. Therefore, Tripanza operates the Winter Spiti itinerary through Shimla and Kinnaur, which is the more practical winter access route to the valley.
Yes. You do not need previous trekking or high-altitude travel experience for this road trip. However, Spiti is a remote high-altitude destination with extremely cold temperatures, long road journeys and limited facilities. Travellers should be physically fit and comfortable with basic mountain conditions.
Absolutely. A large number of Tripanza travellers join our group departures solo. The group format makes it easy to meet other travellers and experience the journey together.
The trip is primarily designed for young travellers, students, working professionals, couples and solo travellers. The suitability of the trip depends more on your physical fitness and ability to handle high altitude and cold weather than your exact age.
Winter temperatures in Spiti can fall significantly below freezing, particularly during the night. In severe winter conditions, temperatures may reach around -10°C to -20°C or lower, depending on the location, month and weather. Proper winter clothing is essential.
We strongly recommend carrying: Heavy winter jacket, Thermal innerwear, Fleece or sweater, Waterproof/windproof outer layer, Warm gloves, Woollen cap, Neck warmer, Multiple pairs of warm socks, Comfortable trekking/winter shoes, Sunglasses, Sunscreen, Lip balm, Personal medicines, Power bank, Reusable water bottle, Basic toiletries. Tripanza will also share a detailed packing checklist before departure.
Spiti Valley is located at a high altitude, so some travellers may experience symptoms such as headache, tiredness, nausea or shortness of breath. The itinerary is planned to allow gradual altitude gain through Shimla and Kinnaur. Tripanza also carries basic emergency equipment such as an oxygen cylinder, oximeter and first-aid kit. Travellers with existing medical conditions should consult their doctor before joining.
Inform the Trip Captain immediately. The team will monitor the traveller and provide basic support depending on the situation. If required, the traveller may need to descend to a lower altitude or seek professional medical assistance. Any evacuation, hospitalisation or additional transportation expenses may be payable by the traveller unless covered by applicable insurance.
Winter Spiti is highly dependent on weather and road conditions. If a route, village or sightseeing point becomes inaccessible due to snowfall, landslides, roadblocks or government restrictions, Tripanza may modify the itinerary for safety. Alternative sightseeing may be arranged wherever possible.
Normally, no refund is provided for sightseeing missed because of circumstances beyond Tripanza's control, including: Heavy snowfall, Roadblocks, Landslides, Bad weather, Government restrictions, Natural disasters. We will always try to provide the safest and most practical alternative available.
No. Chitkul can occasionally become inaccessible because of heavy snowfall or unsafe road conditions. In such cases, the group may stay at Sangla or another suitable nearby location. Safety and road accessibility will determine the final route.
Accommodation will generally be in hotels, guesthouses or homestays depending on the destination. Because Spiti is a remote region, accommodation facilities may be basic compared to major tourist cities. Room heating and hot water availability may vary according to the property and local conditions.
Some hotels and homestays provide heaters, while others may offer them at an additional cost. Electricity supply in remote Himalayan regions can also be inconsistent during winter. Travellers should therefore carry adequate thermal clothing rather than relying entirely on room heaters.
Hot water is usually available at accommodations, but timings and availability can vary. In extremely cold conditions, frozen pipelines or electricity issues may temporarily affect hot-water supply.
Connectivity is limited in many areas. BSNL and Jio generally have better coverage in parts of Spiti, but network availability can change depending on the location and weather. Do not expect uninterrupted internet or mobile connectivity throughout the trip.
ATMs are available in major towns such as Reckong Peo and Kaza, but they may occasionally be unavailable because of network or cash issues. We recommend carrying sufficient cash before entering remote areas.
The Delhi–Shimla–Delhi section is generally covered by Volvo bus. The mountain section between Shimla, Kinnaur and Spiti will generally be covered by Tempo Traveller or another suitable vehicle, depending on group size and road conditions.
Yes. Tripanza may change the vehicle or transportation arrangement if required due to snowfall, road conditions, group size, vehicle restrictions or operational reasons.
Breakfast and dinner are included according to the itinerary. Lunch, snacks and beverages are generally not included unless specifically mentioned. Travellers can purchase lunch during scheduled food stops.
Yes. Vegetarian food is widely available. Food options may be limited in remote areas during winter, so travellers should expect simple local or North Indian meals.
You can inform Tripanza beforehand about dietary requirements. We will communicate them to the accommodation providers, but availability cannot always be guaranteed in remote areas.
Travel light. Ideally carry: One backpack or medium-sized luggage bag, One small daypack. Avoid oversized suitcases because luggage space in Tempo Travellers is limited.
Smoking and alcohol consumption are strictly prohibited inside the Tripanza vehicle. Any personal consumption outside the vehicle must comply with local laws, hotel rules and responsible behaviour standards.
Yes. Couples are welcome to join the Tripanza Winter Spiti group departures. Double-sharing rooms can be selected subject to availability and applicable pricing.
Depending on the departure and property, accommodation may be offered on: Double Sharing, Triple Sharing, Quad Sharing. Final options and applicable prices will be shown at the time of booking.
Electricity is generally available in most accommodations, but power cuts can occur in remote areas, especially during heavy snowfall. Carry a fully charged power bank as backup.
Yes, provided travellers follow the Trip Captain's instructions and respect weather and road restrictions. Winter travel in Spiti naturally involves challenges such as: Snow-covered roads, Sub-zero temperatures, High altitude, Limited medical infrastructure, Limited network connectivity. Tripanza prioritises safety over completing every sightseeing point.
Yes. This is especially important for Winter Spiti. The itinerary may be changed, reversed or shortened depending on: Snowfall, Road conditions, Landslides, Local administration orders, Weather forecasts, Vehicle restrictions, Safety considerations. The Trip Captain's decision regarding operational safety will be final.
Yes. An emergency oxygen cylinder and oximeter will be carried during the trip as part of the group's basic high-altitude safety equipment. These are intended for emergency/basic support and are not a replacement for professional medical treatment.
Keep a personal budget for: Lunch, Snacks and beverages, Monument/monastery tickets, Shopping, Heater charges, Personal activities, Emergency expenses, Extra meals or accommodation due to weather delays.
Tripanza's Winter Spiti group trip combines transportation, accommodation, meals, group coordination and high-altitude support into one organised itinerary. You get to experience remote Himalayan landscapes with a group while Tripanza manages the major travel logistics throughout the journey. Most importantly, our itinerary remains flexible because safety always takes priority over sightseeing during Himalayan winters.
